Lizard Demo
Brad Smith, 2018

This is a demonstration version of the game Lizard.

Lizard is an original game for the Nintendo Entertainment System,
but also playable on a DOS PC. Modern PC, Mac and Linux versions
are also available.

System requirements:
  386
  4MB RAM
Recommended:
  Pentium
  SoundBlaster 16
  4-Button Joystick

DOS configuration notes:

The SoundBlaster 1, 2, Pro and 16 are supported for audio.
Sound can be disabled via the SAMPLERATE setting in the VIDEO / AUDIO OPTIONS page.
Use the BLASTER environment variable to specify jumper settings, e.g.:
  SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1

A Gravis Gamepad or similar joystick is also supported. 4 buttons are recommended.
Make sure the stick is centred when starting the program.
This option must be enabled via the DEVICE setting in the JOYSTICK OPTIONS page.

With the default settings the framerate will be lowered to match a slower computer's speed.
In the GAME OPTIONS page, the SPEED setting may be used to override this behaviour.
The REFRESH setting for speed will synchronize the game speed to the monitor's refresh rate,
which is the best and smoothest option for a fast computer.
The NTSC and PAL options will instead automatically adjust the framerate as needed.

The controls are referred to in-game by their NES counterparts.
For example, if you see a reference to START, it means the key or button
that is assigned to START in the options (by default: S).

Global controls:
  Escape: Open options menu.
  Cursor Keys: Directional control.

Default keyboard controls:
  A button: X
  B button: Z
  START: S
  SELECT: A

These may be reassigned in the options menu.

Pressing A + B + SELECT + START may also be used to raise the options screen.

==* Options * ==

All versions have two options available by pressing SELECT at the title screen:

Easy mode:
An "easy" mode with slower play. This selection will apply to the next new game started.
Other than the speed difference, the game is entirely the same.
On the PC versions, this can be changed at any time in the options menu (press Escape).

Music:
Music can be turned off, or you may listen to the soundtrack here as well.

==* Other Notes *==

Game settings and save files are stored in the LIZARDEM.INI file.

Tool assisted speedruns:
The starting seed of the random number generator will not be deterministic on
hardware after power-on. If you wish to record a TAS that can be played back reliably,
hold LEFT + RIGHT when pressing START to begin the game, which will initialize
the random seed to a consistent starting value. To verify this worked correctly,
you can check the password, which will be set to 11111.

Emulator compatibility:
The NES ROM relies on iNES Mapper 34.
It is simple hardware to build or emulate, but only rarely used.
If your emulator does not run this game, it most likely needs support for this mapper.

Command line:
You may specify any options from lizard.ini as a command line argument as well, with a preceding hyphen,
e.g. "-music=0" will turn the music off.

The DOS version of this game was built with Open Watcom 1.9, and its DOS/4GW extender.
